Trekking to Valley of Flowers
Blanketed with teaming blue Primulas blooming in the high altitude valley, the Valley of Flowers is a nature lover’s retreat, an avid trekker’s dream destination and an abbey for the wanderers. Reaching this kaleidoscopic valley requires a swift trekking of about 16 km uphill. Joshimath in Chamoli district is the nearest town to VOF that is well connected by swift roads with Rishikesh, Haridwar and Dehradun. The 5-6 days trek of the Valley of Flowers starts from Govindghat located about 22 km away from Joshimath. Shared taxis to Gobindghat will be readily available from Joshimath, after which you need to commence a 10 km brisk trek to Ghangaria. Porters, mule or helicopter service is also available to Ghangaria, from here you need to commence a 6 km trek to reach the Valley of Flowers.
The trek route from Govindghat to Ghangaria is common to the Hemkund Sahib Temple and you may see several pilgrims en-route. As one comes near Ghangaria, he is greeted by fields of perfumed wildflowers, primrose bushes and wild strawberries growing on the sidewalks. You need to acquire a permit from the Forest Department at Ghangaria to traverse inside the Valley of Flowers. The permit is only valid for three days and visiting and trekking is only allowed during the day time.
Accommodation at the Valley of Flowers : For accommodation you need to stay at Ghangaria as the Valley of Flowers does not allow the visitors to stay inside the National Park.
Best Time to Visit Valley of Flowers :The Valley of Flowers National Park remains open for the visitors from 1st June to 31st October. The best time to visit VOF is from June to September, when the valley is blossomed with vibrant flowers, just after the outbreak of monsoon.
Valley of FlowersTrekking Itinerary
Valley of Flowers Trek is one of the easiest treks in Uttarakhand. For trekking tourists and visitors need to either start from Rishikesh or Haridwar. The real trek to Valley of flowers start from a small village called Ghangaria. From here Valley of Flowers is about 5-6 km through trek.
Day 01 : Rishikesh- Joshimath
Drive– 254 km
Prep a night before; keep all your trekking essentials in your bag to leave early morning for Joshimath from Rishikesh. Joshimath is ‘The Winter Abode of Lord Badrinath’ and is located at a distance of 254 km from Rishikesh. Let the glaring sun play hide n seek with you, while you savour the stunning views from the window seat of your cab. By evening you’ll reach Joshimath, check in at a hotel and stay for the night.
Day 02 : Joshimath- Govindghat- Ghangaria Trek
Drive– 22 km Trek– 10 km
Fill your empty stomach with nutritious breakfast, assemble your things and check out from the hotel. Now hire a cab to Govindghat located about 22 km from Joshimath. On reaching Govindghat start trekking towards Ghangaria with packed lunch. Ghangaria also known as Govind Dham is the base camp for Hemkund Sahib and for the Valley of Flowers trek. After completing a brisk 10 km trek, you will reach Ghangaria where you can spend the night in.
Day 03 : Ghangaria- Valley of Flower- Ghangaria
Trek– 12 km
Wake up to the calls of the playful Himalayan birds and the careless winds surpassing the gentle alleys. Have breakfast and brush yourself up to traverse through the sylvan meadows of the Valley of Flowers. A sprightly trail will take you closer to the thick vegetation consisting of the exotic alpine flowers and wildflowers crawling on the wooded willows. Explore this naturally abundant area of VOF and get charmed by several sparkling streams zigzagging through the colossal valley. Keep your camera ready to take candid pictures of elusive Himalayan birds and myriad species of colourful butterflies dancing over the soft buds. After spending some time here, return to Ghangaria for accommodation as visitors are not allowed to stay inside the Valley of Flowers.
Day 04 : Ghangaria- Govindghat- Joshimath
Trek– 10 km
Open your eyes to the sublime view of the Himalayas and soak in its beauty while drinking a cup of tea. Post breakfast, get ready to start a 10 km trek to Govindghat and then drive towards Joshimath via Badrinath. On reaching Joshimath, book your stay in a hotel and crash into your beds.
Day 05 : Joshimath- Rishikesh
Wake up early, pack your bags and after having a wholesome breakfast bid adieu to the hills and leave for Rishikesh.
Location of the Valley of Flowers :The vivacious Valley of Flowers seated at an elevation of 3,658 metres lies in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. It is located in the upper expanses of Bhyundar Ganga near Joshimath. While, the lower reaches of Bhyundar Ganga near Govindghat is known as Bhyundar Valley.
Note: The trek route to the Valley of Flowers has been laid which makes the access of tourists easy. A new motorable bridge has been erected in Govindghat which connects 4 km ahead (Pulna Village) towards the Valley of Flowers. Now the tourists have to only trek 10 km to reach Ghangaria (the base camp of Valley of Flowers trek).
